If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

I haven't messed wiht my comp at all so i guess there all the same and how do i only start one stick. and how do I know how amny I have?

Which model of HP Pavilion dv3500 is it?
Look at the label on the back of the laptop.
It should have 2 more letter after "3500".
The model I checked has originally 2GB of RAM installed (not 4GB like yours).

Run memtest.
