    Can't see pages on internet
    « on: July 21, 2009, 11:15:39 AM »
My McAfee expired and so I downloaded AVG.  Then I realised you had to pay for AVG eventually, so removed it.  This left my McAfee intact, but expired.  I then tried to access the internet, using Firefox as I usually do, and I get connected, but no page download.  I'm doing a virus scan currently, and doubt anything will be found.  Can anyone explain why I can't get access to the net like I used to.#

    Thanks

You don't have to pay for AVG, ever.

Use the McAfee Removal Tool to removal McAfee. http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html
    Then reinstall AVG: http://free.avg.com/

Thanks for your help, but I can't access any webpage - when I type in a web address or just try to connect, the page seems to load, and "done" appears in the bottom left hand corner, but the page doesn't load - I can't see anything - just a plain blank page.

      Any ideas?

      Oh, sorry.

What Web browser? Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.?
What firewall do you have installed (if any)?

        No probs kpac.

I'm using Firefox and if its still running, with it having expired, McAfee.  I have removed all the AVG stuff I downloaded.

        I'm using Windows XP.

Have you got a USB memory stick and access to another computer?
If you do, you can download the program from another PC and transfer them to this PC.
While you're doing it, download Malwarebytes' Antimalware, SUPERAntiSpyware, and HijackThis, transfer them and run them also.

If you can manage to do that, post the 3 logs from each program. Here is a detailed guide: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html

You might also be able to run a virus scan with AVG.

If you haven't got access to another PC or memory stick, then we'll have to come up with something else. ;)

            Hi There

Well, I've done all that and have discovered that the fault seems to be with my internet connection.  I use a BT (British Telecom) wireless connection and that seems to be okay - I'm using that same connection on this computer (a laptop) in another room.  I've checked all the cables and they are firmly plugged in.

            Any ideas/suggestions?

How do you know it's the connection?

Did you install the programs and run the scans?

I tried to run the applications, but couldn't connect to the internet.  AVG couldn't detect a connection, nor could the spyware etc.

I am using this laptop, not my desktop, which is the computer with the problem, using the same wireless connection, with Norton internet security, and as you can see, its fine.

Could malware be stopping my desktop from connecting to the net?

Try downloading and running LSPFix on the PC with the problem. You'll need to transfer as before.
