Silent Runners...Not Sure What to do next
« on: May 26, 2005, 05:27:55 PM »
Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help me.  I will start by saying that I am not very computer literate.  I can get around ok, but not great.  I have been unable to access secured cites.  I have read through many of the topics and downloaded Registrar and Silent Runners.  When I ran silent runners, it created an icon on my desktop that says Startup Programs.

The problem is that I'm not sure how to proceed now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wait now... Why are you installing these programs? Any problems? Also, if the icon is on your desktop, just open it...

Silent Runners just creates a text file showing everything open on your computer at the time it was run.  If you are uncomfortable reading through it feel free to paste it here and we can look at it.

A better tool might be Hijack This from majorgeeks.com.  Not only does it create the analysis file for review.  It allows you a means to correct the problems it finds.  Again you will need someone to look at the file for you is you are not comfortable with it before you take any actions.

Thank you both for your help.  I downloaded the silent runner because after browsing through all of the messages regarding this problem, I for some reason thought that was a way to try to fix it  :-[

I just tried to dowload the hijackthis and an error message came up saying the program performed an illegal operation.  I have pasted the details below in case it might help...

WINKEP caused a divide error in module WINKEP.EXE at 0167:00403b21.

Do you get any messages when this happens?

Yes, I do get a message.  For example, I can get into the main screen of my credit card companies and banks, but I can't get into the screen where I enter my name and password to access my accounts.  The screen that comes up is pasted below.  I have tried to adjust my browser settings following some directions I found on this website from people having the same problem.  I have also tried the resfresh button and followed the directions at the end of the error message about the security setting.  I know it is not just the websites being down either because I can still access my accounts from my work computer.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have for me.

    Error Message that comes up:

    The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Please try the following:

Click the  Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
    click  Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the  Back button to try another link.

Have you done a virus scan? winkep.exe may be a downloader. Search your hard drive for "winkep.exe" and upload it to http://virusscan.jotti.org

      And scan for viruses.
