    It has 2 UBS cables.
One is for Power + data and the other is just for power.
i have 1.1 USB, but the specs say drive will work with 1.1

I have one USB port on my laptop, so i have a 4 port USB hub. I connected both the power+data and the power cable to the hub and I get nothing. The power comes on the hard drive, but the drive is not visible anywhere in my computer, windows explorer, or in disk management.

Right click My Computer and select Manage then Disk management...
Does the drive show up there ? ?
If so right click the drive and select Properties and report back...it may need to be formatted first.
Are you sure you are hooking things up properly ? ?

NOTE : If that machine has only one USB slot i doubt it can run more than 3 devices unless your 4 port hub has external power....

no, it does not show up in disk management.

i was thinking that maybe the 4 port hub wasn't able to handle the hard drive. it isn't 3 devices. it is one device... the hard drive. the hard drive is portable, so it has two USB cables. a power + data USB cable and a power USB cable.

the hub is a Q-stor  QU24WR and it does not have external power

Are you sure that the part number listed is accurate?  It doesn't show up on any search I've completed.

Have you tried that drive on another machine such as a desktop ? ?
Does it show up there ? ?

the drive shows up fine on any computer I've tried that has more than one usb port.
I tried it on two different laptops that only had one usb port (using a 4-port hub adapter) and it didn't work.
i'm guessing it just isn't supplying enough power.

It probably doesn't like the USB Hub.  Try it without the hub.

If the hub is not self-powered then no, it won't work.

Some basics on USB. USB operates at 5 Volts, 500 milliAmps.

As this drive is wanting two usb ports, enabling it to draw 1 amp of current to operate normally, and you are running it from one USB port, you are giving the entire hub 500mA of current to work with, and the drive wants 1A (1000mA).

If you bought a powered USB hub it should work.
