    « on: August 24, 2009, 01:21:27 PM »
Since I still have issues an said that  I would post them later an have to start an new post about this some details are going to be overlooked an not mentioned.  Here is the config info then.

    Ethther Net Adapter Local Area

    Connection spefic dsn suffix

    auto config ip address 169.254.252.XXX
    sub net mask 255.255.0.0
    default gateway
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

If I fall who is there to pick me up now.  I stand alone but I stand as the gaurdian for whom I wish to protect.  The sound of my blade utters my name as you fall.  For I shall not move.  For those that forsake the very people are wosres

      1.  What's the problem?  Perhaps you could provide a link to the "overlooked and not mentioned" details.

      2.  APIPA Address.   Do you know your "auto config ip address 169.254.252.XXX" is within the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) range?

          1.  Linksys Model Number.  Provide the complete "model number" for the Linksys router and I'll see if I can find link to users manual on Internet.

The model number is probably listed on bottom of router; e.g Linksys "WRT54G v5".

          2.  IP Address for Linksys Router Configuration Pages.  Currently it could be set to anything.  There should be hardware capability to "reset" the router's configuration back to its default values.  Once reset to the default address, user name, and password; you should be able to access and configure it to your desired configuration.   All of this should be documented in the users manual.

          3.  Objective.  Are you trying to setup the home router as a "default" gateway to the Internet for your local area network?

              1.  I'm assuming your Linksys router has a WAN port and four wired LAN ports.  Does it also provide a "wireless access point"?

              2.  Complete Model Number and Version.  Please use the pictures located here (click on the "Where's my model number Question Mark ( ? )" to find your complete Model Number and Version.

              3.  Did you buy the router "new" or "used"?  If used, do you know if it still has the Linksys firmware or has it been re-imaged with third party firmware.  If it's been re-imaged, I don't know that a hardware "reset" to factory defaults is still an option.  Go slow until you know what you have.

For at least one of the model numbers, Linksys reduced the amount of firmware memory available leading to a demand for the older versions (2?).  People were taking their fifty dollar (US) Linksys router and re-imaging the firmware with third party firmware to produce a five hundred dollar router (in functionality).  The more memory available, the more functionality they could pack into it.

that it does, I wont be useing the internet port though.  I am aware of where it is located it just that I cant give it too you at the moment.   :(  I got it used from my father under the asumption of it being wireless.  I couldnt say for sure.  So in other words I could theroy move more data.  Cause I dont have the information with me is why since I'm not at home an left what is written down there too.

Here is the Model BEFSR41 ver 2

                    1.  BEFSR41.  This model number is not "wireless", although the "BEFSR41W" is.

                    2.  Documentation.  So far I've only been able to find the Quick Installation guide for BEFSR41 version 2 from its support page.   (Be sure to select "Version 2.0" on that page).

                    3.  APIPA Address.   The IP address you posted earlier is an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address.  When your NIC interface is configured to get an IP Address automatically (through the DHCP protocol), and a DHCP server cannot be found or does not respond; Windows will arbitrarily assign an address within the APIPA range with a Subnet Mask of "255.255.0.0".

This means either you are not logically connected with the Linksys router or its DHCP server function is "disabled".

                    4.  Objective.  Do you just want to use the BEFSR41 as a "switch" to network four devices together or do you also want access to the "router" functionality?

                    5.  Reset Factory Defaults.  The Quick Installation pamphlet has instructions to perform a hardware "reset" back to factory defaults.  This resets the configuration web page address of router to "192.168.1.1" as well as resetting the "user" and "password" values.

I'd think twice before doing this; issues being is it yours to "modify" (ownership) and does it use standard Linksys firmware?  Although if I were to write new firmware, I would either disable the "reset" button or program it to be compatible with new image.  So maybe that's a non-issue...

That is right, I dont think anything is really connected at all since I couldnt get it working.  I just want to use it as it was an have a jumper to the hub so that it can connect more pc's.  It does  :o  I must of missed that an such.   ??? :-\  Why I was going too?  I couldnt say an dont think that I'm going to mess with any of that.  :-\

Since a "regular" switch works at Data Link Layer on MAC addresses (no IP address or subnet mask required for switch itself); let's see if BEFSR41 (in its current unknown state) will perform simple "switch" functionality.  (Don't know if BEFSR41 will permit us to ignore its configuration and use it as simple switch).

                        Do you have:
o  Two "working" PCs with known good ethernet NICs
o  Two known good "straight" ethernet cables
o  One known good "crossover" ethernet cable (or a crossover adapter)

What operating system and service pack level will each of the two PCs be using?
