Well as one who has had more than a few it is FAR from a sad song. Each one is indeed a cause for celebration now. truenorth

I agree truenorth. But rather than celebrating (like with a birthday cake, party ect.), I try to quietly treat it like just another day so maybe I can slip by and 'Time' won't realize how old I'm getting.  ;D

I'm glad this topic was revived, because I wanted to post my two favorite saddest songs.
    "Untitled" by Simple Plan
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ7oqmikZDQ
"Time to Say Goodbye" by Placebo
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13HnYhiE7xU

    Thanks hurricane!
Very sad! - simple plan-untitled with lyrics
I viewed several Simple Plan and Placebo videos on You Tube and I like their music very much! Thanks again!  ;)

lectrocrew, I am dismayed by the number of horrific events you have had to witness in your life.
I can list more, and worse, but my original point was comparing my experiences to the situation this man lived with for years. It made me try to imagine how he felt through it all. Day-in day-out, for a long time? And what 'sad' lyrics his song would have contained?
Yes, I've witnessed traumatic/fatal events of others, and been at the edge of death at times myself (1993- shot in the arm, leg and chest from ~3 feet in a robbery with a .380 cal pistol/ 1985- head-on collision into a bridge pillar @ 70 MPH on I-240/ 1976- I was the passenger in the back seat with my drunk friend driving, racing another car @ 90 mph when we went head-on into a 1973 buick electra 225 and killed all 3 occupants of that car and the passenger in the front seat of our car, the driver of our car died later).
A very good, long time friend of mine is in the hospital now with terminal cancer and I visited him yesterday. He barely knew who I was. He won't be here much longer.
Me? I have few regrets for my life so far, and I don't worry much about myself anymore. I figure I've got an angel watching out for me or something like that? But I have my issues... And there are reasons I tend to listen to sad songs:
e.g. In 1994, I was working for a logging company in remote areas with no phone contact available. We finally got to town (phone contact) Saturday and I called my mother (who was dying from terminal cancer). I had not been to see her in a while and I told her I would be at her house the next morning (Sunday) to visit. I didn't make it to her house that morning because I was too sick from all the alcohol I drank on Saturday night with all the boys on my logging crew. I called her house later and my sister answered her phone to tell me our mother had died that Sunday morning. I later found out that she had gotten out of her bed (with half of her insides already taken out by the doctors, and with her IV bag) and cooked me a meal... turkey and dressing and all the other thanksgiving side dishes (this was in May, not Thanksgiving day). Nobody ever ate that meal.  :(
Maybe I'll write a sad song one of these days...
Anyone else care to post your favorive sad song?

I think that the song Making love Out Of Nothing At All by Air Supply is one of my top sad songs.
Its an oldie but a goodie, I always listen to it when I'm feeling broken hearted
Thort of the day: I was normal once....didn't like it

Blaine Larsen - How Do You Get That Lonely
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdSaI080VXc&ob=av2e

This is old news now but my heart still hurts for the recent loss of our dear country singer,  Mindy McCready, who chose to end her own life.

Blaine Larson is not any superstar, and I've kinda lost track of his career lately, but I remember this song well and I really think of it when I cry about the loss of Mindy.

here's some of her beautiful music

      and more Mindy

      With a sad heart,
      Mike

Neil Peart (Rush).  The poet laureate of our time (in my humble opinion)

The dancer slows her frantic pace
          In pain and desperation
Her aching limbs and downcast face
          Aglow with perspiration.

Stiff as wire her lungs on fire
          With just the briefest pause,
          Then flooding through her memory
          The echo of old applause,

And she limps across the floor
          And closes the bedroom door.

The writer stares with glassy eyes
          Defies the empty page
His beard is white, His face is lined
and streaked with tears of rage

Thirty years ago how the words would flow
          With passion and precision,
But now his mind is dark and dulled
          By sickness and indecision

And he stares out the kitchen door
Where the sun will rise no more.

Some are born to move the world
          To live their fantasies,
Most of us just dream about
The things we'd like to be

Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it

For you the blind who once could see
           Bell tolls for thee
           Bell tolls for thee.

I have admiration for the intellect that is set forth by the regulars of this forum. and I invite all who are unfamiliar to explore the musings of Neil Peart.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Sorry, I forgot to link Blaine Larson's sad song in my last post.
        It's here.

Good call glathem40 with Neil Peart's song. I didn't start listening to Rush until mid 70's when Neil replaced John Rutsey on drums. Since then I bought plenty of rush on vinyl in those days such as 'Rush', 'Fly By Night', 'Caress of Steel', '2112', 'A farewell to Kings', 'Hemispheres', and of course 'Moving Pictures'.
I started doing the country music deal after that when my life stuff took me there so I haven't kept up with 'Rush' lately, but I love to listen to 'The Temples of Syrinx' on 2112 anytime.

I gotta love Neil Peart's character on drums. In my opinion he is the best drummer I've ever heard in my 53 years, with his great character in his beat. JMO.
        Thanks, and have fun!
        Mike

There are a bunch that come to mind...

BTW: RUSH - 2112 is a great album, still have the LP. When I get out of work I am going to have wipe the dust off the cover and fire up the turn table listen to that front to back. My wife will probably tell me to put my headphones on since she cant stand Geddy Lee's vocals  ;D

Before the dawn - Judas Priest ... is probably the saddest in the list.
Titanic Movie Song - My heart will go on - Celine Dion ... always gets my wife into tears  when leonardo dicaprio dies and sinks into the sea, the movie ends and then they show the cast as ghosts on the ship and then her flood of tears start that I believe is amplified by the song.

Judas Priest - Before the Dawn, Lyrics

Before the dawn, I hear you whisper
In your sleep "don't let the morning take him"
Outside the birds begin to call
As if to summon up my leaving

It's been a lifetime since I found someone
Since I found someone who would stay
I've waited too long, and now you're leaving
Oh please don't take it all away

It's been a lifetime since I found someone
Since I found someone who would stay
I've waited too long, and now you're leaving
Oh please don't take it all away

Before the dawn, I hear you whisper
In your sleep "don't let the morning take him"
