    CPU Temperature
    « on: September 01, 2009, 12:20:45 AM »
My CPU temperature as detected by Asus AiBooster is around 60 deg C with no program running, 65-70 deg C with only Firefox browser running, and as high as 80 deg C as soon as I run application like Photoshop. I think that is very high and sometimes Windows shut down on its own, which I suspect is due to CPU overheating.

I recently changed the heat sink and add 2 fans to my casing. One fan on the side is sucking air in, and another fan at the back is blowing air out. The CPU fan is blowing air downwards on the heat sink. The CPU fan is at 2400-2500 rpm.

I did not monitor the CPU temperature before I changed the heat sink, but I remember I didn't experience the automatic shut down before the change.

Is there anything I did wrong or is there any way I can cool down my CPU?

    Thanks.

Did you apply thermal paste when the heatsink was replaced?

    What make/model of processor?

Yes, the thermal paste was applied accordingly.

      The processor is Intel Pentium 4 630, 3000 MHz (15 x 200) LGA 775

intel says 67C is about max on that CPU so you're definitely overheating...
I just noticed the fan is blowing down on the CPU ? ?
        It should be blowing out.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

But i believe ny stock intel cooler blows away from the heatsink...i'll test it with a smoke and let you know.

I have the identical cpu in my little Shuttle, with the fan set to ultra quiet it idles at about 45 - 48 C and goes up to 60-62 when working hard. 80 is way too high and I am not surprised it shuts down. These cpus do run warm, and 65 is nothing to worry about as a maximum temp under heavy use but 80 is too much.

I know it's overheating so how should I cool it down?

When I installed the new heat sink I was wondering about the fan blowing direction too, but it seems that there is no strong conclusion among discussions over the internet as to which is correct. I've read that even if you reverse the blowing/sucking direction it'll only differ by 2-3 deg C.

Also, I've check the fan's blade design and it's obviously designed to blow down.

So, any idea to fix this?

I'm agree with Patio that the fan should be blowing out.

Maybe you should modify you cooling system.

              Of course.
All 4 locks are properly locked.
              Couldn't get any tighter.

The blades are spinning anti-clockwise. According to the blade's curvature and spinning direction, I think this fan is designed to blow down?

Btw, I have cleaned the heat sink and fan, and reapplied new thermal paste, and make sure the heat sink is locked properly. Still, no changes to the temperature.
