so sound on xp pro

Hi there just rebuilt an old computer and cannot get sound to play have updated drivers everything is switched on and speakers do work have no conflicts have it doesn't seem to be the os or software (that i can tell) pc is aopen mb on board sound any help would be appreciated

Are there any errors showing in Device Manager at the moment?

edit: make sure the sound is not muted as well

Have checked device manager no conflicts have updated all drivers have tried 2 other sound blaster sound cards they work in other computers but not in this one
 mute is not on when you play thru winamp or windows player they run alright but so sound.

have built and played with computers for a while now but this one has me beat never had a problem like this before.

Did you remember to install the chipset driver before all other drivers?

go to control panel ,click sounds,then advanced, then advanced again and make sure the box for digital output is checked and see if that helps.

Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to read my issue.
had a friend over last night fault is on board sound chip faulty when external sound card put in on bourd sound would not surrender.
Turned off at bios level now have sound.
