Setup Internet on Windows 98
« on: October 06, 2009, 02:53:30 PM »
Hi.

I have Windows 98 SE and want to setup internet on it. I have an "ADMtek AN983 based ethernet adapter" which 98 does not recognize. My problem is I download a driver (for 98, ME & 2000) but have no idea how to install it.
I've attched the driver so you can look at it.

I would appreciate it if someone can help me get internet. :)

First of all it has to be unzipped
When you do that you may try to install it using the device manager.
But, looking at the information there, it looks like it was written for Windows 2000.

My best advice is to ask a friend if they have an old network card, one that is listed in the Windows 98 nerwork adapters.  A good choice would be an older 3Com PCI card.

Rather that explain it myself, here are two guides you can follow.

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/tips/drivers/updatedrvdevice.htm

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/131806

The examples are for a video driver, but the same general idea.

I have some chores to do, so I have to leave for awhile. But I am sure somebody else here will answer your questions.  :)

    1.  Win98.  The attached driver should be fine for Windows 98 SE.  Note the lines quoted below taken from beginning of "Netadm9x.inf" file.

    ;             Copyright 2001-2002 ADMtek Incorporated.
    ;          Windows 2000 & Win98 combined inf for NDIS5 driver
    ;**************************************************************************

    2.  Install Driver.  Unzip contents of "ADM9X.zip" somewhere.  Right-click on "Netadm9x.inf" file and select "Install" from resulting context menu.  Reboot Windows 98 SE.

    3.  Device Manager.  Open Device Manager to see if network adapter recognized and driver loaded.
         a.  Right-click "My Computer" icon (on desktop)
         b.  Select (left-click) "Properties" from resulting context menu.
         c.  Select "Device Manager" tab.
         d.  Do you see any yellow exclamation marks, blue information marks, or red X's?

Use the add new hardware wizard. First extract the zip somewhere- for this I'll assume C:\ADMTEK.

Let it search for the device in question. either way, say it isn't in the list and click next. It will then prompt you wether you want windows to search for new device. say no, and that you'll select it from a list.

Hardware types- network adapter. Click the "Have Disk" button. Now enter C:\admtek or whatever folder you extracted the zip too. Hopefully it will install, and you'll simply have to reboot.

    Hope this works!

I folowed BC_Programmers steps and they worked great. Althought it was a bit difficult to find the place to click the "Have Disk" button and it would only accept "C:\WINDOWS\CATROOT" for a directory. I put the files in the CATROOT directory and it copied the files asked for my 98 disk and then rebooted and internet worked.

Thanks for all your help guys. I'm used to installing executable drivers. :)

nice! Wasn't sure if there would be any differences, had to check using ME, which I assumed was similar enough, guess it was :)
