And also, I do have antivirus.  I use Eset Nod32

I don't see it installed.

open your C: drive then open the MGtools folder and right click on analyze then choose Run as Administrator,

I don't know what to tell you.  I have been using it continuously for a couple years now.  I see the little message window pop up at least once a day saying it has updated the signatures file.  I just now opened my Task Manager and looked under processes.  It is listed as ekrn.exe and under Description it says Eset Service.

Ok, I ran the analyse program and fixed the selected files.  Now what ?

How is the computer running now?

You can delete the specialized tools downloaded now. exeHelper, AVPFind.

Go to the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.

Should I reboot before I try it out ?

Ok, I rebooted and then downloaded a training video from a site I go to all the time.  Once again, I watched it download bit by bit and when it was done, I had nothing.  Same as before.

That would probably not be a good idea.  This is a trading site for which I am a paid member to use these videos.  And I know the site is working because I just watched one of the videos off of it on my laptop this morning.

It could be a corrupted video.

I'm not sure why it is that most support-type people assume that all callers are ignorant, but I want to assure you that I am not a newbie nor am I an idiot.  I do know a bit about what I'm talking about.  The files on that site are not corrupt, I have been with them for a long time.  But to satisfy your curiosity, I tried to download a video file on Rapidshare, which I also do a lot, and it did the same thing.  Then I went to Windows Live to try to download Windows Live Mail, which I uninstalled a few days ago thinking it was the problem.  And the same thing happened with that download.  I watch it download and then the little download box disappears as soon as it is done, without offering me to Run, Open Folder or Close, even though that little box to close the window is not checked.  Then when I looked at the folder that the downloads should have been in, it is empty.  And a search of the hard drive reveals that those files are not there anywhere.

So...I'm an idiot for asking. You know, process of elimination?

Maybe at this point you should go to the Microsoft Windows Forum and see if anyone there has some new ideas. It doesn't appear to be a malware issue.

P.S. Don't think I'm brushing you off. I'm not offended or do I think you are calling me stupid (hopefully). I'm just out of ideas.

I'm thinking at this point that I should do a complete reinstall.  It's just so much hassle.

You might try creating a new user profile and seeing if it is the same with the new profile. That would be quicker and easier than formatting.

That is something I am not familiar with.  Can you tell me briefly how to go about doing that ?

Also, can you tell me how you think that might help ?  If there is a problem on my computer, how will creating another user profile make any difference ?
