Frustrating Program Error
« on: June 16, 2005, 01:54:12 AM »
This is a frustrating one, this happens alot when I want to run some programs or an installer (e.g. The Sims, Theme Hospital, countless other games and software, almost everything I try) I get this error

"D:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not sutible for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application"

I have the option to close or ignore, if I click Ignore, I go back to install screen, If I close, I go back to the install screen, I can find no help for this issue, So I was hoping...

I'm Running winXP Pro Version 2002

I mean, It's not a DOS program, and since when cant microsoft windows NOT run a microsoft windows product?

I have a feeling it may be a remanant from when I had windows 2000?

    Asp....  How long has this been doing this ?
    Why do you have your operating system on "D" drive as opposed to "C" drive ?

    When you installed Win XP Pro .......did you do a clean install ?

    let us know

    If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

    Why this is happening with Windows programs is strange since autoexec.nt sets up the 16-bit environment. Also the fact that your Windows directory is Winnt indicates some remnants of Win2000 remain.

    To fix run the following from the command prompt:

    copy d:\winnt\repair\autoexec.nt d:\winnt\system32

    After you copy the file, find it in Windows Explorer, click properties and lock it down by giving it a read-only attribute. This only fixes the symptoms so a virus and antispyware scan might be helpful.

    Hope this helps.  8)
