I would be taking advantage of the Warranty on that machine...

Wellll, first one question - did anything unusual occur just before the problem arose? For example, did you mess with any settings or install any new software or drivers? Was there a virus problem or did you see an error message? Let's just rule out a software problem before returning the system ;)

So you turned off the system while it was still in Windows. Not a good idea. What OS are you using?

There is. You need to boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r. If you don't have a real XP CD, you can download an .iso image of the recovery console and burn it to a cd (with .iso burning software) and then boot to it to get to the RC. Download the image from here: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212

The user shut down the system in the middle of a session. It's not an equipment malfunction, it's user error that can be fixed.

That's because you are not booting to the cd. You need to go into the bios and put the cd at the top of the boot order.

Reboot the system. As soon as the system starts you should see a message on the screen that says: "Press ??" to enter Setup (or bios). Press whatever that key is to get into bios.

                  Look Fast.

As soon as you see that screen press either DEL (the delete key) or F2 (The F2 function key at the top). One of those should work with emachines.

Listen closely. When the system first starts start tapping EITHER the DEL key or the F2 key and that should take you to the bios. Try one key first and if it doesn't work reboot and try the other.

You need to post what is wrong with the other system. "Crashed" doesn't help.
