Why did my volume icon disappear?

i was gonna turn up the volume and the icon was gone and i tried the buttons but nothing worked so here's what i did
1. went to start
2. all programms
3. accessories
4. entertainment
5. and clicked volume control and nothing happen

Go to START - RUN and type sndvol.exe and press ENTER. What happens?
