    DOS Games
    « on: September 26, 2009, 08:33:00 PM »
At the time I got my first computer, the current operating system was Windows 3.11 and that is what I had on my DX66MHz, 486 computer, 90mb hard drive with 12mb of RAM and Windows 95 was about a month from being released.  This year and the next few years were the heyday of DOS games.  There were some really good games that came out around that time.  We played Sim City 2000, Xcom, Atrain, Wolfenstein, Civilization I, but I think the best DOS game I ever played was Lords of the Realm II and the Siege Pack.
If you have played DOS games and have found some really good games, would you please list them here?
I think Windows 95 played DOS games better than any other OS so I'm going to look around for a 486 to put 95 on just for a DOS game computer.

You can use DosBox which is what I use on my Vista laptop.

    I play:
    Moonstone
    Elite: frontiers
    Krondor the betrayal
    Wings
    Dreamweb
    Cannon fodder

Try a google search for galaga.

You can also get RobyDOSbox which adds a graphical front end to dosbox.

          Some great dos game...

          XCOM Apocolypse
          Steel Panthers series

There's quite a few decent sims from that era too like Apache Longbow 1 & 2, EF2000 etc.

for g oodness sake- their DOS games, pure DOS runs DOS game's better then ANY, and I mean ANY version of DOS running under ANY version of windows.

Running DOS games under any version of windows is like strangling a cat. Even in the luckiest case where you put it in it's place the first time and it works, you never know when you'll get bitten in the *censored* and have to do it all over again.

note: the poster of this comment does not under any circumstances condone the strangling or otherwise any sort of malfeasance towards animals.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

          Wow! Another DOS games thread.

          My recommendations:
          • Space Quest series (especially 4 (w\ voiceovers) & 5, SQ6 was crap).
          • King's Quest series (if you're more into fantasy than sci-fi)
          • Mechwarrior II (the original DOS version, not the Windows version made later that sucked)
          • Phantasmagoria (this will actually run on WindowsXP, but runs better in DOS, great game)
          • The 7th Guest (one of my favorite games ever, can be found on eBay for less than $10)
          • X-Com: Apocolypse (excellent tactical strategy game)
          • Duke Nukem 3D (Come get some!)
          • Warcraft II & Beyond the Dark Portal expansion
          • Command & Conquer (the original, also available for Windows in the C&C The First Decade boxset)

I could go on and on, but that's enough for now...
