what is up with firefox?
« on: January 01, 2010, 03:24:51 PM »
Any computer that I use, whether it's using dial-up or broadband, when Firefox is used I frequently get the message: Server Not Found   when navigating to a web page.   Then when I click on "resend" it works, but it's gotten to be quite annoying....

Are there settings in Firefox that can be adjusted to fix this?

This is a problem with your internet connection. "Server not found" is what's displayed when it can't connect to the site.

"Ping" command will always tell you, if it's your browser, or your connection...

What should I ping?

I pinged www.mozilla.com and it said that it could not find it...

PING www.mozilla.com

Is there something else I should ping or does this confirm that the problem is with the connection...?

edit: don't some servers block ping requests?

If "ping" finds no connection, then you have connection, not browser problem.

Should I tell my ISP about it or can it be fixed from my end?

I don't have this problem with IE so I do have SOME connectivity.

Doesn't make sense that one browser would connect and not another...so i would assume what you are seeing is intermittent connectivity.
Power off the modem and /or router and wait 2 full minutes.

Power them up and wait 3+ minutes...re-boot and see what happens.

I use AT&T broadband at my house... I get approx. 2.3 mbps downloads according to speedtest.net

My mom uses dial-up, and when I'm at her house, the same thing happens at about the same frequency as it happens at my house..

I was in an electronic recycling center not to long ago to get rid of some old stuff and when they registered me, they used Firefox to access their database and I happen to notice that they got the "server not found" message, also...    lol

On very same computer (laptop)?
How often does it happen?
When it happens do you immediately try another browser to see what's going on?
Does it happen on particular web pages?

Yep, same desktop computer...    It happens about as often as it happens when I use Firefox at my house..  When it happens I just click "resend" and then it works, but it doesn't always work...  However, I got tired of the problem, especially it (firefox) running on a relatively low bandwidth connection, so I just started using IE at her house..

There is no particular web page that it happens with, not that I have noticed, anyway..

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?

However, the strange thing is, that "ping" gives you an error and you say IE has no problem...
