Need new video card...but which one?
    « on: January 09, 2010, 02:47:39 PM »
Hello all! I'm looking to get a new video card for my PC but I'm not sure what to get. I've been told to get the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT but I have the feeling that it's a little outdated (I could be wrong though). Here are my specs:

    Gateway Desktop GT5432
Vista Home Premium 32-bit (no Service Pack)
AMD Athlon 64x2 Processor 5000+ (2.6 GHz, 2x512 KB L2 cache, 2000 MHz system bus)
    ECS MCP61-P AM2 Motherboard
    NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE
3GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive
    One PCI-Express x16 slot
    One PCI-Express x1 slot
    Two PCI conventional slots

If you need any other info, please let me know. Thanks in advance for your advise!

well that depends on your budget, a 8800 is the classic budget mans video card, with more bang for you buck that any other card. however i would suggest looking into the GTX260 its an exceptional card for the price; £100 im not sure how much it is in dollars. but thats good

It also depends on what you're using the computer for. If you're a gamer then you want a more advanced video card but if you're just using it to surf the net, read e-mails, or other standard stuff you don't need to get the most expensive/advanced one on the market :)

I got Midnight Club 2 and can't get out of the menu screen without the PC freezing up. If I can get a card that can play that and my various emulators then I'm good. I don't mind a high end card as long as my PC can handle it without me having to get an additional power source and such.

There is normally a sticker on the PSU...
You may have to remove a side panel...

Oh, BTW, my PSU is a DPS-300AB-15B so I'm running at 300W. The specs for my monitor are as follows:

19-inch Gateway FPD1975W DVI 720p Widescreen LCD Monitor

                1440 x 900 native resolution
                16.2 million colors
                Tilt stand
                Integrated power supply (100-240V 50/60Hz, 1.2A)

                Connections:
                AC Input: IEC 320 C6
                VGA
                DVI-D (Dual link w/HDCP)
