    « on: January 31, 2010, 10:19:01 PM »
I was told I can use the Ubuntu cd to help me get files off my virused infected computer onto a flash drive. I have the cd and started my computer to the cd. Can any one help me. I'm on the main page.

What do you mean by 'main page'? Are you at the selection screen or are you actually into Ubuntu?

      1.  For the "back story" see their previous threads on the topic:
           a.  Computer Crash
           b.  boot from cd
           c.  Ubuntu CD
           d.  Installing Ubuntu CD

      2.  I suggested they post here for assistance with their Ubuntu questions/issues.

Instead of installing Ubuntu to the hard drive, boot it from the CD.  Suggest you practice with the Ubuntu Live CD on a known good working computer system.  While on the working system you should practice file recovery from hard drive to other media.  Once you know what the "normal" procedure is, you can tackle the problem computer.  It's always possible there's an underlying issue on the problem computer that prevents you from successfully booting and using the Ubuntu Live CD.

        See http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/.

At some point you should tell us which version of Ubuntu Live CD you're using...

The one with options similiar to:
o  Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer
               o  Install Ubuntu
               o  Check CD for defects
               o  Test memory
o  Boot from first hard drive

If so, choose "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer".  Hopefully that will successfully boot Ubuntu from the CD.
