Monitor displaying No Signal error message in Ubuntu 10.04
« on: September 30, 2010, 04:12:23 PM »
Hi. I'm having a bit of a strange problem, and was wondering if someone could help me out.

This evening, I tried installing Ubuntu on my 64 bit Windows 7 desktop using Wubi. It all seemed to install correctly, and I was presented with a Ubuntu splash screen on boot. The computer restarted itself, and acted normally,  Giving me the option to select Windows or Ubuntu. I selected Ubuntu and hesitated on the following screen, until it chose an option automatically. This is where the problem started.

My monitor displayed the error message "No Signal", so I powered off the machine and tried again. Same message. And again. I have a Radeon 5700 graphics card running at 1920 by 1080, via a HDMI port (my PC) to DVI  cable (the monitor.) My apologies if this is in the wrong board.

Thanks in Advance,
James

Hello James,

The "No Signal" message is encountered when your monitor is getting no data from your video card. This could be caused by a couple different things. Driver related issue, video settings set too high for the monitor, video card is bad.

Do you get video when you first turn on the computer?

If Yes, then it's likely either a driver issue or a video settings are too high for your monitor. My guess would be that it's a video settings, e.g. your resolution is set too high. Although from the sounds of your setup I'd imagine your monitor should support higher resolutions. Try booting into Ubuntu Safe Graphics mode, F4 at boot. If that works try adjusting the video settings.

Hi.
Do you get video when you first turn on the computer?
I get the BIOS screen, the option to choose an OS, and Windows runs normally.
Try booting into Ubuntu Safe Graphics mode, F4 at boot. If that works try adjusting the video settings.
I get a splash screen, like when I first tried to boot Ubuntu, but then nothing.
I'll look into updating graphics drivers?

I'm grateful for the help,
James.

Sorry; I can't find the edit button.  >:(
How would I update the graphics drivers for Ubuntu when I can't boot to it?

Thanks,
James

Are you able to get into the virtual console?  To do this, just wait a few minutes after selecting Ubuntu and press Ctrl+Alt+F1. If you can do this we may be able to help you fix your driver issue.

Sorry for the lack of reply in ages - been busy.
I have found a solution of sorts, in using a DVI to VGA adapter and a VGA cable, which works so I'm gonna mark this solved?

Thanks for all your Help,
James
