Do I need to scandisk or defrag a CD or other disc?
Answer
No. A CD, DVD, CD-R, Blu-ray, and other discs cannot be modified by Microsoft ScanDisk, Microsoft Defrag, or any other disk checking utility. These utilities are only used to fix issues that may exist with computer hard disk drives and floppy diskettes.
If you're having problems reading a disc, we suggest you try cleaning the disc. Often smudges, finger prints, hair, or other substances on the disc can cause read errors. Additional help with cleaning discs can be found on our cleaning page.
