Banner
When referring to web advertising a banner or banner ad is an image ad that first appeared in large quantities on hotwired.com, after the first banner ad was sold to AT&T on October 27, 1994. Today, banner ads are found on one of the margins of a web page, most commonly top center. The banner displays an image and text to help advertise another website or service. Below are two examples of what a banner may look like. In the first example, is a picture banner ad for Computer Hope and the second is the pixel dimensions of the most common banner ad.

The above two banner ads are examples of horizontal ads, in addition to these types of banners there are vertical ads and skyscraper ads. Both vertical and skyscraper banners are taller ads that go in the left or right margin of a web page. Although the above banner ad dimensions are still used, the most common ad today is roughly 728 pixels x 90 pixels in size.
