With web advertising, a banner, banner ad, or web banner is a narrow horizontal or vertical image advertisement on a web page. The first banner advertised AT&T, and was published on October 27, 1994, on hotwired.com. Today, banner ads are found on one of the margins of a web page, most commonly top center. Below is an example of a banner advertisement.
The above banner ad is an example of a horizontal ad that is 728 x 90 pixels advertisement. There are also button ads, vertical ads, and skyscraper ads of various sizes. Both vertical and skyscraper banners are taller ads that are in the left or right margin of a web page.
