Butterfly keyboard

Keyboard first introduced on the IBM ThinkPad 701 in 1995 that allowed for a larger keyboard (11.5 inches) with a smaller more compact laptop. As can be seen in the picture to the right the butterfly keyboard would expand over as the laptop lid was opened and would extended over the left and right edges of the laptop. As the laptop was closed the keyboard would collapse again. Because of poor sales and larger laptops with bigger displays this type of keyboard was only found on the IBM ThinkPad 701 and has not been used with any other laptops.
