Alternatively called physical storage or real storage, physical memory is memory that exists in the form of modules, like RAM (random-access memory). Essentially, it's memory you can touch, unlike virtual memory, a method of creating memory by swapping data between RAM and a hard drive.

The total amount of physical memory on a computer depends on how many sticks of RAM are installed and their storage capacity. For example, if a computer has two 64 MB memory modules installed, it has a total of 128 MB of physical memory.
