A stock photo is a photograph that was professionally taken to be redistributed online for generic use. While some stock photos are available for free, many of them require payment or a subscription to a distribution website like Shutterstock.
Usually, stock photos have watermarked previews. Once they are purchased, the watermark is removed, and no royalties are required to be paid to the original photographer. The image shows an example of a modified stock photo; it helps demonstrate the difference between a color and a grayscale image.
