dead motherboard?

I recently cleaned a Desktop for a friend... IT WAS HORRIBLE... it had ROACHES and all sorts of things in there specially the a amount of dust was starting to look like MUD.

Before i cleaned it it started and shut off after like 10 minutes probably because if all the dust making the computer overheat.. So i cleaned it and when i was about to turn it on it DIDN'T want to turn on.

Everything is there all the cables are plugged in the right spot.. And i noticed when i plug in the power i see my room light dim a little and then go back to normal but it isn't really that big of a deal because it does that with all my electronics.

Make sure the on/off switch on front of the computer is correctly seated to the jumpers on the motherboard.  You might have jarred the connection when cleaning it.  Bring the computer into another room and use one of those power outlets.  The outlet you're using may not be outputting proper voltage.

If no joy so far, swap in a power supply of equal or greater wattage.  You'll have to hunt one down.  Once you do that and the computer will still not power on, then you'll need a new motherboard.

follow up... the computer dies.. after a while... and it kinda bothers me.. any ideas power supple is still good coz the motherboard is still lit and the power button is still lit up too its just the cpu fan and the hard drive that arent on... could it be overheat? or battery?

When the computer is on and you can see the "desktop", are fans spinning ?

no just the fans stopped spinning... and i figured out that if i take off the pci Ethernet card it turned on and its working again.. i cleaned the card with a q-tip a little and plugged it back in currently the PC is running but im waiting if the Ethernet card is going to make another effect to the PC.

Are you sure that the power supply you put in the computer is at least the same wattage as the original supply ?

If you got it working by removing the PCI card, it's a sign that the power supply is not sufficient in its output.  Removing peripheral components reserves power for the rest of the system...

OK... on the old one it says that it cant exceed 160 watts and on the new one it says cant exceed 230

Post the computer specs as well.

Are you sure those voltages are for the entire power supply, or just one voltage.

Those are both really both low numbers.
