Crazy question about WINDOWS 98SE
« on: August 20, 2010, 10:24:49 AM »
This is going to sound weird but here goes. I really like the background picture that can be accessed by windows 98SE. This isn't wallpaper, it's if you select none. When none is selected,  on 98SE you have a pattern you can choose from along with a color. First of all, for some reason all of the wallpaper choices aren't listed where they should be either. I can understand if I don't get any responses to this and won't be upset. Does anyone have an idea where these things might reside where I could copy it and put in on another computer as wallpaper.

I don't think I understand your entire question.

I Do understand what you mean by patterns. It is a small 8x8 monochrome bitmap that you can create Which appears behind your normal background if you have one set. (Display Properties->Background Tab, and choose the "Pattern..." button)

The pattern you select is saved in the registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop in the Pattern value as a space delimited series of strings.

From what I can tell the actual patterns that you select in the dialog are hard coded into Explorer or a shell DLL, and not available for direct editing.

If you export the values in Desktop and import them to another PC, you will transfer the pattern, though.

Wallpaper itself iirc is merely a listing of applicable files from "C:\windows\web\wallpaper" unless you change the folder with tweakUI.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Thanks for the response and the info. As far as the wallpaper in XP, it shows everything available in the Windows/web/wallpaper folder. I believe that's the address. It doesn't do that in 98SE. I did transfer(copy) the harddrive with 98SE on it to my present computer, so you're saying I would be able to find them there?

If i understand you correctly, it's a small .bmp file stored in c:\windows
I think i know what you're talking about 'cause i deleted mine  ;D

Any background you can select, that came as part of the 98 OS, is stored as a .bmp file in the above location; that's where 98 stores such files.

Do you know the name of the pattern?  Like, "sandstone" or whatever. You can search for the name. But i did double check on my (98SE) own system, and that's where background/wallpaper files are stored. Unless it's a part of a Theme (some basic Themes come with the 98 OS). <Themes> is a sub-directory somewhere under <Program Files>

Thanks for responding, the thing I'm looking for is when you select none which brings up a pattern selection along with a color selection. The name of the pattern is named "Stone". If you would, go to your background and choose none, then choose the pattern "Stone" and see if you can find where it's located.

As I mentioned already in my previous reply:
Patterns are stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, in the Pattern key.

The actual pattern sequences themselves that are listed in the box are stored in windows resources. (one of executables, probably browseUI or shell32.dll)

BC, while I appreciate your input, unless you give me specific directions (click here and click there) you are basically giving the directions to Pittsburg to someone that does not only not have a GPS but a map as well.

      OK, here's a translation.

The current pattern is stored in the registry.

the set of patterns windows has are not accessible.
