WindowsXP Pro Will Not Shut down, Why?

I am running Windows Xp Pro.
please please please, help me... if somebody out there can help me with this problem.. i will love you forever ... anyways the problem that i am having is that, when i put shut down on the computer, it says preparing to shut down like normal then it shuts down...

BUT when it does shut down, the loading light shuts off, the monitor shuts off, but the power light stays on.. so it doesnt really shut down all the way.. i opened it and i see that the cpu fan keeps on spinning, its almost like it went into a stand by mode, but you cant wake it up..

i have to hold the power button for 4 seconds, and then it completey turns off, and i know that this is not good for the computer..... soo please if anybody can help me out with this issue, it would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance.

Make certain the BIOS is properly configured. Has this happened since you first used the computer?

Mac, I'm not sure if AMP is enabled, not sure how to check if it is... but that screen shot that you posted looks just like what it looks like for me.

and i've looked at the bio's and im pretty sure that they are set right, and i think that its happened before, but now it always does it...

It could be a program that requires more time to shutdown than Windows XP actually gives it. Try eliminating programs by shutting them down before the computer is turned off.

If you will, do this quick check. In the Run window type - cmd - and press enter. You'll see a command (cmd) window. Now type - apmstat - press Enter, and see what it says.

k i did that, cmd => apmstat... and it says:   'apmstat' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

i also tried this on my other computer, and it says the same thing, and my other coputer works fine.

You could try this......type msconfig.....in the run box and chose diagnostic start up..and tick the use original boot ini ....and now shutdown pc if it will have it......

Had a problem with one server and had to switch the image to another. How does that look?

Maybe the hyberfile.sys is corrupt. If you uncheck hibernate and reboot then try it again what happens?

Forgot. You need to install the support tools! (SORRY!)

The Apmstat command lets you view a machine's Advanced Power Management (APM) status. This file isn't installed by default on Windows XP and Windows 2000. Instead, the file installs when you install the XP and Win2K support tools, which are located in the support\tools folder of your installation CD-ROM. To install these tools, you run the setup program that's in the support\tools folder.

If you don't want to install all the support tools, you can manually extract Apmstat from the support.cab file and move it to a location of your choice (no other files are necessary to run the Apmstat command).

The required file is apmstat.exe which will then be in the C:\Program Files\Support Tools folder

the pc is not networked, it has a fresh install of xp pro. and its running sp1.. maybe i should download sp2, but first im going to try the apmstat.exe and ill let you guys know if that works.. and i just wanna say, thanks for all your help

If SP2 is not already on the system I wouldn't add it in unless you are sure that the system is clean. Better to slipstream SP2 together with the core files from your XP CD if you don't have an OEM installation and do a clean install, scan for virii, and get it all back to your liking then make a drive image to restore with.

SP3 is said to be due soon, so it might be worth the wait to save doing too much updating.
