My computer does not open a new window when I click on a link.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong with my Dell Dimension 5100? I am with Windows XP Home Edition.Recently I have been unable to open links sent to me in emails.I used to have no trouble with this- it has been just recently. I am not very well "clued up "with computers,and this is why I am seeking help. I would appreciate any advice offered.

Download the two fixes and run them.

1.  Open IE8 with protected mode on
2.  change to protected mode off and do not restart the browser
3.  click a link that should open a new window, it works!

                                Your reply stumped me a bit-sorry,but I'm not very computer literate. IE8 means Internet Explorer 8,yes?I have dowmloaded that, but still don't know how to get protected mode, and turn it on or off.Very sorry for this,but could you talk me through this next step? many thanks, Les.

Don't worry about it. His suggestion will not help. Did you run the registry fixes?

Hi Allan,
             I clicked on each of the fixes(html& url),and each time I then clicked open this file,then for an instant another window opens and a green bar rapidly moves across right to left,then another larger window opens headed  "html association-fix" within which there is an icon labelled "html association-fix".I click on this icon and a window opens headed  File Download Security Warning.I click in the box "Run" and another long narrow(horizontal) window opens headed Registry Editor containing a message"are you sure you want to add the information (many digits and symbols).I click in the box "yes" and a similar box appears with the message "the information in c/document(many digits and symbols) has been successfully entered into the registry.Finish. But unfortunately nothing has been achieved.Sorry for the long explanation- I wanted to tell you exactly what I did in case you could see what I did wrong. Leslie.

Okay. You did it the long way around but regardless, it sounds as though the registry changes were made successfully. Is IE your default browser? And which email client do you use?

Yes,I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 last night. My email server is Outlook express.

But this happened before you installed IE8, correct?

Yes,yours was the first reply,so i first tried your links, then when that didn't work tried Andre's solution,and downloaded Windows8.I'll try that new link you've just given me now.Thanks.
