Windows installer opens and run each time I open an MS Office 2003 program.  Clicking on cancel button exits installation and program runs normal.  PC has Windows XP PRO operating system.  It is an older HP Pavilin PC, 731 mhz cpu that I got at flea market with no installation or backup disks.

Download Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) and look for an item that may be calling for the installer.

Downloaded file and couldn't find any program that would call for installer.

The only time that windows installer opens and run is when I open an MS Office program such as word, excel or other office programs and it attempts to install the program I open.

Look for Windows installer under Start--> Run-->(type)services.msc--> Ok-->Windows Installer and Check Start-up type. If its on Automatic, Right-click and choose Properties and choose Start-up type to Manual and click Apply. Check again application. Or toggle also to Disable as last option if it persist.

Start-up is set on manual, would it interfere with running programs if I disabled it???

I disabled it and it still starts when I opened MS Word

Just make sure it is the only one modified. Try disabling it to check your issue on the running program. You could always adjust it later.

I disabled it from the log on tab of properties windows of window installer and now it only flashes on for a split second and disappears.  Also there is no dependancies for that program so why couldn't it be deleted entirely???

Have you tried reinstalling ms office?

Disabled it on microsoft services...? Dependencies for WI is Remote Procedure Call.

I can't, I got the PC from flea market with no back-up disks.

What I would do:
Uninstall ms office. Install OpenOffice and be done with it.

jason, I not sure of what you are asking "Disabled it on microsoft services...?"

I opened the service page per your instructions, and found "windows installer" on the list, I went to properties and disabled it under the general tab which had no effect till i disabled it from log on tab.  Now it flashes for a split second and disappears when I opened MS Word.  I don't know what will happen when I restart my PC

I saw that the dependancy for WI is RPC but there isn't any programs that is dependant on WI on the list.  Worse yet, I still don't understand any this
