Open the laptop and make sure the cable to the hd is properly seated. Assuming it is, go to the website of your hd manufacturer and download their diagnostic utility. Burn it to cd and run it. Sounds like your hd may be on the way out.

When I encountered this problem on an HP Laptop, I started removing/swapping/reseatting RAM modules(make sure they are properly seated), Check for any wires loose, Reinserted Network Card and the CMOS(nickel) Battery and thankfully it work. So its either a hardware is loose or failing, but most I think it just needs a reset from the battery to reconfigure. If there is are 2 beeps(short/long), then its likely a failed hardware.
