Windows 7 is slow and freezing

My Windows 7 is freezing and slow
    Hey,

I have Windows 7, and it's really freezing and slow. It won't even let me pull up my AV, or my Firefox. I am posting from my iPhone. I did a restore back to earlier today, and it didn't help. If I had a restore point for a few days ago, that probably would of helped. It all started yesterday. I only have one PC. I haven't been on my PC much, and when I did go on this is what I get. I even did a uninstall of Avast because it wouldn't update, and it's a mess. In the backup I have Avast back, but all messed up. The same for my Comodo firewall. From time to time I even get System errors.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, but it's the upgrade version that I bought last year. I have too much data on the PC to wipe it clean. I also don't remember where I put my Windows 7. It required to have Vista on first then upgrade.

Could someone please help me on how to fix this mess?

What is make & model of computer?   Desktop or laptop?
Have you tried booting to Safe Mode?
I suspect some kind of hardware problem.  Are you prepared to run tests?

Yes, it can boot into Safe Mode. I don't really want to replace any hardware. Could I run the tests in Safe Mode?

It was installed with Vista, but I upgraded last year to Windows 7.

You can test the hard drive with the drive makers software:  http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
You can test the RAM with MemTest:  http://www.memtest.org/

Excessive dust build-up can cause overheating.  Remove the side & look inside at the CPU fan/heatsink.

I don't go inside of my PC. I'm sorry about that. How can I test it when I can't make it pass the Firefox page into Google? Could it be a virus/Trojan?

          Take it to a shop.

What other options do we have? I don't have money to spend on a shop. I just purchased the iPhone, and had it billed to my Verzion account.

I think it's kind of odd that one day my PC is working fine, and the next day it's not.

On what part does it go slow and part it freezes? Try removing Comodo firewall and reinstall Avast. Make sure you are keeping a backup installer. If you have other protection software installed such as spyware/malware scanner, please post them.
