Having problems with connection with usb cable

Like I said, now I have problems with connecting win xp and win 7 with an usb cable (I'm not stupid, I talk about a wire that ends with a male plug at both sides).

When users come here without specific details about what they want to do, it is hard to provide a clear answer to the problem. There are very few users here that have mused USB to USB  files sharing between tow computers. I have only done it on Windows XP.  I doubt that Windows 7 has the right driver for it. Also, you did not describe the cable in detail. What brand is it? Did it come with a driver disc?
Product is no longer available.

You need first read the linked topic to know more information.
Then:
- its brand is StarTech.
- it didn't come with a driver disc.

maxum,
Did you give us the model # of the cable? Does it look anything like the one I show in the picture above? None of those are supported by Windows. The only work with special drives from the maker or vendor. The only way to trace it down is from the model number. Thee are at least four companies that make these. Each one may have a different
StarTech has a web site. To fine the drier, you have to know the model number.

It is just a plain A to B  cable. Used for a Hub. By itself, it does not tie to PCs together. To run a USB between two PCs, you need a 'smart' cable.

Here is one that does not need a driver:

For the benefit of all reading this post:

You can not just take a doable ended USB cable and link two PCs. There has to be a 'Hardware Helper' to perform the task.
IMHO the best deal is a real Lap Link Kit. It has everything and there are now on sale.
About $30 at Amazon.

Laplink PC Mover Moving Kit

This is a file sharingn thing.
This is NOT, as far as I know, a networking device. If you need networking pleae make that clear. Thee is another USB device for link a PC into a LAN.
If I am wrong, somebody say so!

maxum, If you have NOT read Geek's web links yet. Here is an extract from the 2nd one that may cause you to pause BEFORE attempting your project with your current cable.
"Connecting any two computers using USB requires a special proprietary bridge cable; the usual USB-to-USB cable does not work as USB does not support such type of communication and attempting to do so may even damage the connecting computers as it can short the two computers' power supplies together, possibly destroying one or both machines or causing a fire hazard.[3] Therefore, Direct Cable Connection over USB is not possible; a USB link cable must be used, as seen in the Microsoft knowledge base article 814982. However, with a USB link cable, a program which supports data transfer using that cable must be used. Typically, such a program is supplied with the USB link cable. The DCC wizard or Windows Explorer cannot be used to transfer files over a USB link cable."
Failure to consider the outcome may cause you great grief and to slip into an expressive language which will undoubtedly be unfit for general publication on any forum.truenorth

In your other discussion, you said you have a NETGEAR router.  So, why not use it to share files between the two computers?  Isn't that the obvious solution here?
