need help w/proook 4420s not booting
    « on: November 19, 2011, 09:06:39 PM »
I cannot complete a startup repair or system restore and computer just loops and will not boot up.  When I run the start up repair I get a message that says, if you have recently attached a devise to this computer, such as a portable music player, remove it and restart you computer.  Then I click finish and it just shuts down...

    Welcome!
Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help.
The forum will help everyone with all computer questions.

You have a HP ProBoook 4420s with Windows 7 and it is not booting. -Right?

Do you recall any error messages?

When  booting, you can hit nth F8 key to start safe mode. Did you try that?

Have long have you had it? Do others also use it? Did you recently install a new game or program or utility?  Have you recently installed a new printer, scanner  or camera?

Do you have another PC that cam help you make a recovery CD?

Have you already looked on the HP site for any clues?

It is possible that you may have a viruss
But until you can boot it, there us little that can be done.
But a AV rescue CD just might work.
The success rate is low, but worth a try.
        Take a look at this:
        http://antivirus.about.com/od/freeantivirussoftware/tp/avrescuecd.htm
Using a good PC, you will download an ISO of you choice, burn it to a CD with an ISO  burner.  [ http://www.freeisoburner.com/ ]  Then try to boot in in  the suspected laptop. It will try to connect to the internet and likely will not be able, Still, make it continue anyway and it scans with what data it already has and will fix any errors made by malicious software. Sometimes that does the trick.

My favorite is Alvira. But they are are good. Try at least one.

If the rescue CD finds anything, please come back here and report. By working together we can stop the virus attacks.

Oops. I missed that. So you can boot in Safe mode command?  This might mean the video driver go zapped. Can you boot into Safe VGA mode? If so, you will want to remove the video driver and re-install it. Somehow it go corrupted.

But try the rescue CD also

This is a best guess. It is late and I have to go to a four hour convention tomorrow and need to get to bed.
