Graphics card problem

Well, I tried to play a game, played for a bit then froze, screen went all weird with multi coloured squares goin down. I restarted my pc and installed a update from the ATI website and restarted and tried game again. Thistime i managed to play for 5mins then its froze and i tried to move mouse and keyboard and only heard these beeps. I tuned of pc and restarted. then froze at desktop. So I restored my whole pc, can you help please? I really want to check out the demo to Serious Sam 2.

SPECS: (Bought pre-built from PC WORLD.UK)

OS: Windows XP Media Center Edition
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.4Ghz
Graphics card: ATI Radeon X600
SoundCard: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
RAM: 1024mb (1gig)

    Update XP.
    Update directX.
    Update video drivers from manufacturer's website.
    Update sound drivers from manufacturer's website.
    Check the game website for fixes & patches.

    I have directx9 installed, my pc is clean, still confused (check for updates on windows all installed) sound card driver is updated.
