Computer Hope Forum downtime
« on: October 02, 2005, 07:40:46 AM »
Because of the high-volume of traffic Computer Hope is receiving and how the YaBB forums work we were encountering issues with un-killable processes, causing server issues. Our web host locked our YaBB directory causing all scripts to stop working while we look for a solution to prevent this issue from occurring. The forums went down at 10:00AM (MST) on 8/1/2005 and we hope to get them back up ASAP.

Forums came back online at 12:30AM (MST) 8/2/2005 and we hope the issues that were being caused have been corrected after a few minor changes. Because of these changes the forums could potentially encounter other issues. If you're using the forums and happen to notice anything out of the ordinary such as missing information please let us know. We will be monitoring this issue as time goes on.

My pleasure. Hope the fix works and doesn't cause more issues although it's still a possibility.  :o

Believe me I try to respond to as much as I can, but once I received the e-mail that the forums were taken offline (without notice) I made it my number one priority to respond to all forum down related questions immediately. So that being said normally my e-mail response or response time in general is not always that fast. I really wish I could get a response out always that fast but as of right now just not humanly possible.

True, True.

I generally only get to come on CH on the weekends, and when I tried to access the forums last night...and it didnt work I was confused.

But yeah.  We all have busy lives.  I understand!

Have you ever considered enlisting volunteer help from some of the many regulars you have here? I am sure some of us would be more than happy to simply answer some of the e-mails you get, if only to let people know their query has been received. You could even provide canned text if you're not comfortable giving over control of the responses. I know from other sites there is nothing quite so frustrating as sending a website admin a message and not getting a response.

We're all on your side!   :)

Part of the new mailing script I'm writing will allow others to have access to it so it's dsefinitely something I will consider getting done because I hate having e-mails go unread.

I wonder where all the traffic is going to  ???

The forum is not that busy. I am certain that there are forums that have more visitors.

Other forums link to this one so do not show up as a visitor. This can create heavy traffic even if no one is logged in here.

Actually it's not the forums that are receiving the traffic it's actually all the other pages on Computer Hope that are receiving the majority of the traffic. So that causes server load, and with that load plus how the forums were handling the file locking it was causing server issues.

        Hey Admin,

        Whats your name?

Also, did you forget my suggestion to add an "anything and everything" forum to the boards?  I think it would be a more exciting way for people to stay around, and encourage board growth...if that is what you are looking for.  Talk about only computers can get a little...lets say...uninteresting to some....after a while.  I think it would be a great way to shake things up.

        Anyone else agree with me?

Yes, we could have a section that includes teenage pregnancies.

Wow, think of the witty comments I'll be able to fire off.

Amazing just how often that happens in the 'celibate' church, especially when responsible people either don't have children these days or think twice before having one.

My name is "Nathan" and nope your suggestion to add this category is still in the to-do list primary because I'm still debating if I should add this or not. My main concern is several users believe there are too many categories as it is right now in the forum and I always try relying on the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle.  As of right now I think the "other" category would be the same as an "anything and everything" category. If other users want to have a section like this or if there is high enough demand maybe that will help change my mind. But for now I think if someone wants to talk about something other than computers they are more than welcome to post it in the "other" category.

I suggest we eliminate the Internet Explorer section and filter that nasty, nasty brand. Or at least write it in lower case to show how unworthy it is of being mentioned

        Internet Explorer

Can we create a Mozilla Firefox section? Time to introduce some culture into people's computers.

I don't think that's such a good idea... I think the Internet Explorer section should STAY because not everyone uses Firefox... However, I DO agree to the fact that we should maybe open a Firefox section...

You agree that it is written that we should create a minor chance of opening a Firefox section?

        Is that you, Flame?  ;D

Why not just consolidate it to a "Browsers" Forum ? ?

The Internet Explorer section for the time being will stay. While alternative browsers (Firefox/Opera/Netscape) are becoming more popular IE still dominates and is going to have the most users who need help. Here is some interesting statistic data that may help back me up.

This is the top percentage of Computer Hope users browsers last month. This is off of the over seven million unique visitors for that month.

        71.14%       MSIE 6.0
        19.16%       Mozilla/5.0
        3.35%       MSIE 5.0
        1.13%       MSIE 5.5
        0.80%       Opera 8.0
        .
