The PCI slot is a rework of IBM's MCA, and because it is capable of running alongside the old ISA slots during its initial introduction, it actually had a chance of becoming popular. MicroChannel Architecture tried to force everyone to buy all new cards, and was totally rejected. PCI was introduced over a transition period... I still have an ISA slot on my MB - and it's in use.
