activating the screen
« on: April 07, 2013, 11:51:49 AM »
When my screensaver darkens the screen, it takes much longer for the mouse movement to reactivate the screen when I compare to other people's desktops.
Where can I adjust this?
Can't find it in screensaver settings.

Using LinuxMint13maya-KDE with pretty modern hardware and 8 GB RAM, so it's shouldn't be a hardware problem I think?

Is there any reason you need to use a screen saver? If not, don't. Just set the display and hd to power down after a defined period of inactivity. Screen savers use resources unnecessarily.

I should've said it "blanks the screen"; there's no slideshow or anything like that using resources.

I agree...don't use it then.

It still uses more resources than allowing the display and hd to power down.

How long does it take to wake when you move your mouse? And how long does it take to wake when you press a key on the keyboard?

In KDE system settings it's called "screen locker", and I don't have it active even.
Still when I don't use a mouse or keyboard for some 15 minutes it just blanks the screen.

I really don't want it to turn off the desktop because I might be just off to the kitchen to make some coffee or so; it would be a drag to have to reboot every time  ;)

EDIT: I found in Power Management that there's "dim display" set for 10 minutes, and "screen energy saver" for 15 minutes.
I could set them longer, but I still wonder about the difference with other pc's.

Reactivating the screen takes about 4 seconds - no drama of course, but strange just the same.

Didn't spot we were talking about Mint at 1st...
However others have had issues...including USB devices not working properly.
This may help...

I don't think there's a relation there; this is not a laptop (no hibernation) and I don't dual boot (LinuxMint only).
Also the mouse works fine.
The whole thing is not a problem btw, just plain awkward  :P

I'm sorry - you're posting a problem because it takes 4 seconds for your display to come back on - is that correct?

As I said it's not so much a problem but rather something that has been puzzling me for some time.
My machine is very fast with all other things, so I just wanted to find out why this aspect is so different.
Almost any other dekstop I see has the screen activated in a split second after mouse movement.

If you're asking whether I intended to waste your time with this; of course not - it's not a bug I want to report but merely a simple question.

and set energy saver to 300 minutes - can go to bakery and back  ;)
still wondering whence the slow monitor response though.

Four seconds is not slow.
It's about 3.5 seconds longer than eg my girlfriend's laptop or my desktop at work.
Anyhow, I was just curious; sorry I may have come across as trolling - absolutely not intended  8)

Wasn't taken that way at all...
It may depend on your setup vs. hers...probably software related would be my guess.
