Windows Vista crashes during Sleep mode
    « on: June 06, 2013, 01:16:50 PM »
    Hello
I have a Compaq Presario with Windows Vista Home Premium. There is 2 GB of RAM and 201 GB free of 287 GB total.
The problem is that whenever it enters sleep mode, a few problems are taking place. The computer will either
    1) crash/restart
    2) stay frozen in sleep mode, only solvable by holding power button down to shut down.
Upon restarting, I have the option to run in Safe Mode. I did this, and the problem didn't persist while in Safe Mode, but I have no idea where to go from there. I checked the Problem Reports and Solutions and here is the report from the most recent incident:

    Problem signature
    Problem Event Name:   BlueScreen
    OS Version:   6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
    Locale ID:   1033

Files that help describe the problem (some files may no longer be available)
    Mini060613-11.dmp
    sysdata.xml
    Version.txt

View a temporary copy of these files
Warning: If a virus or other security threat caused the problem, opening a copy of the files could harm your computer.

    Extra information about the problem
    BCCode:   9f
    BCP1:   00000003
    BCP2:   86766430
    BCP3:   86776348
    BCP4:   B76DCA58
    OS Version:   6_0_6002
    Service Pack:   2_0
    Product:   768_1

This has been happening for about 2-3 months. Any help would be appreciated.

Crashing in sleep mode is usually down to a driver not behaving properly when entering or resuming from a low power state.
A simple fix would be to just not use sleep mode.  If you don't want to do that, please let us know the exact model of your Compaq Presario, so we can help you further.  The first step will probably just be to update any necessary drivers with the latest versions.

I tried not using sleep mode, and I got all sorts of freezing and blue screens.
How would I find which drivers need to be updated?
      The model is SR5633WM.
      Thanks for the response.

Scratch that. I didn't try running it with sleep mode off. I changed the setting to not restart the computer when an error occurred.

I had an older computer do that to me you mentioned one of the warnings were not to open certian files. What I did was do a system restore then started removing everything I downloaded from the time I remember it starting. You might not have to go that far. But I am sure there is a software that is causing this.

I'm unsure if you're running Vista 32 or 64 bit, so I've provided links for both.
        Graphics driver (32-bit
        Graphics driver (64-bit
        Chipset driver (for both)
Network driver - for some reason the link isn't working, but just scroll down to "Vista and WinServer 2008 Auto Installation Program (SID:1568647)" and click any of the mirrors next to it to download the driver.

Install those, reboot when requested, and see how you go.

Turning off sleep mode seems to do the trick.
However, I would like to update the drivers as well to solve the problem.
I installed the chipset driver and network driver. Neither of these solved the problem.
The graphics driver would not install on my computer (I have a 32-bit Vista by the way.) An error message popped up that said "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer please obtain the appropriate driver from the manufacturer"
Thanks for all the help, hopefully we can figure this out so I can use sleep mode again.

Apologies for the late reply.  If the graphics driver won't install, that's often a sign of some custom firmware which stops you using the "normal" drivers, you'll only be able to use whatever Compaq decide to update with which is probably ancient so won't help.

Did anything change before this started, or has the PC always had this problem?  Is it fully updated from Windows Update?

Windows update has some optional updates available, but it's not really anything that would appear important.
The computer has always given us trouble. We've done system restore a few times, which would temporarily fix the problem, however after a few months a similair problem would arise.
It works fine with sleep mode turned off, so I guess if all else fails I'll just stick with that.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50-139NR notebook with this same problem. The problem of not resuming after sleep mode started occuring after a Windows Vista update around June 13, 2013. I also cannot get the driver for 32-bit to load. I am hoping Windows will release a new update that will fix this problem since it started after their update. I now keep my laptop from going into sleep mode to keep from rebooting all the time.

Yeah hopefully. But for now I guess we'll just have to go without sleep mode.
