    erased hard drive
    « on: October 21, 2014, 12:05:51 AM »
    Hi, I need help.
I am using Dell Inspirion 530s.
Today I decided to remove Linux from my computer and re-install Vista. The installation was nearly complete when we had a power failure! Now I have nothing.
The screen is blank and only a hum is coming from the tower. I put the Vista disc into the drive and tried to reboot, still nothing happens.
I have no idea what to do next. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You just charge your laptop battery and again install window vista on your computer.

Their computer is a desktop not a laptop... as seen here: http://www.dell.com/us/dfh/p/inspiron-530s/pd

If the computer does not post at boot ( nothing on display and display is known to be working ) I would say the Power Supply may have taken a surge and is bad. Only way to find out would be if you had a power supply tester or can swap it out with another good power supply.

I have had power outages spike computer power supplies before and kill them.

If you see the Dell Logo etc and then nothing after that, then i would reset the BIOS, but I am thinking you have nothing at all to screen and so its more than likely a bad power supply.

        Thanks for the reply Dave.
When the power went off it was for a few minutes. Nothing in the house worked. When it came back on everything is working again except the computer which was doing the vista install.
I have a surge protector on the computer and modem, which didn't trip.
This leads me to think the power supply is still ok on the computer. The light is on the front, I can hear the fan running and it beeps constantly but nothing else is happening. The power button light is on the monitor but the screen is blank.
I am at a loss at what to do next, any help would be appreciated.

I'd still swap the power supply if you have one available... these are the same symptoms of a power supply that is damaged. It can turn on, but not enough power to boot properly.

        1.  I have a 530S with WinVista.  It's a Small Form Factor (SFF) desktop with SFF power supply.
        2.  Power strip surge protectors are not very effective.  Actually, they don't work at all.  UPS's do work.
        3.  Amber or Blue?  Fan running means 12VDC is good, nothing more.
        4.  Hardware problem; psu or motherboard.
        5.  Normal.

I have a solid blue light on the tower.
The fan is continuously running and quite loud.
The beeps are in lots of four, then a two second break then four more and so on.

I think you have problem with your ram.It may have got loosen.
Open your cpu cabinet and refix the ram (You may clean it with a piece of rubber).
I think this method might work!!! (OR you may change your ram)...

I think you need to ignore Allan's post as I once faced similar circumstances and refixing the ram helped me.

Because it worked once for you is irrelevant...it's not the RAM...

I have tried cleaning the RAM as suggested, no luck still not working.
Looks like a trip to the repair store. I would like to thank everyone for their time and effort.
