All you should have to do is plug the monitor into the back of your laptop( look for a blue connector with 15 pin sockets) and hold down the function key (Fn) usually in blue letters and press the key in the top row with the blue letters that say CRT/LCD until the the monitor displays an image. You should be able to select lap[top display only, Laptop and monitor, or monitor only.
