can't open any web pages or get mail

Suddenly I can not open any web pages via my dial up connection or get email. Tried on mozilla and ie same response cannot open page. Email says cannot find pop3...
I am us xp operating system
maybe a virus or something?
Have run AVG and found nothing
Have tried my user name and password on another dial up computer and works ok
Computer rage looming!!!

    Are you actually getting connected to the net?
    Open a dos screen and type...

    ping www.computerhope.com

    ... and push enter.

    Yes I am getting connected to the internet, connection dials up and username and password is verified but cannot open any web pages at all. I saw your suggestion for pinging given to someone else so I tried that and recieved replies which I guess confirms that I am connected. Thanks

      Can you download 'ewido' on another computer then run it on your problem one?

      After leaving the last message (from work computer) I download and took home spybot loaded and ran it. It picked up heaps of stuff so dealt with that then tried again and magically it is up and running again.
