    Make a bootable usb drive
    « on: August 28, 2017, 08:01:10 PM »
HP HP Pavilion Desktop PC 570-pOXX.
    Windows 10 Home (X64) Version 1703

This is a new computer and the first I've had with UEFI. Until today I could not boot to usb or dvd. After considerable research I found my way into UEFI setup and disabled fast boot and boot security, and changed the boot order to usb/dvd/hd. No satisfaction. Desperate, I found HP Support and the agent suggested I make a usb repair drive using MS RecoveryDrive.exe. It took an hour to complete but to my suprise it booted! (Not directly, there was a menu offering the usb or the hard drive.)

My question is, what did MS do to make this disk boot that no other burning process did? (I have an unbootable Macrium Recovery disk and Win 10 ISO disk burned with BurnAware.

Also same problem with dvd. I assume that whatever applies to usb also works for dvd.

    Really, I don't know.
Bear in mind that Intel and others did a lot of work on the UEFI specs.

You don't have to change the boot order to boot any drive.
For HP, on power up, keep tapping the F11 key & it will display a boot selection.
If you want to create bootable USB drives, use the free tool Rufus.  http://rufus.akeo.ie/

I boot Macrium Recovery USB's all the time with UEFI BIOS.  Use the Macrium tool to create it.  For your HP use the 64-bit version.

You can boot the DVD the same way, F11 at power up bypasses the UEFI.

Ida sworn I tried F11 without success. But I'll give it another try.
