What is the Easy Way to take a screen shot?
« on: November 06, 2019, 06:34:52 PM »
I am now using Windows 10 almost everyday. ;D

In my old age I am forgetting things. There used to be a real simple way of making a screen shot in Windows. But somehow I have disabled it. I don;t remember clearly and when I Google it I get informational overload.  :'(

I recall the at one time I could juts hit the print screen key and everything was automatic. It would save a image file somewhere with  a numbered image name.

What was it that did it?

The absolute simplest way is to press the PrintScreen key which puts the screenshot into clipboard where you can paste it to the app of your choice.  On Windows 10, if you have OneDrive setup, pressing the PrintScreen key will automatically save the screenshot as a png image file in the folder OneDrive/Pictures/Screenshots.

In my workplace, where most people are non-technical, we get them to do this

1. Get the screen the way you want to capture
2. Press the Print Scrn key
3. Open Microsoft Word in a new document.
4. Right click in the page and choose Paste.
5. Print, save, or send as email attachment.

Alternative for slightly more technical people:

3. Create a new email in Outlook
4. Make sure it is HTML format
5. Right click in the email and choose Paste.
6. Send it to somebody.

If you are on windows 10, Microsoft has the snip & sketch tool that can be used to capture screenshots as well.

As far as I am aware, it seems like Microsoft will someday retire the older snipping tool (the one mentioned by Patio) in favor of the snip & sketch tool.

if you want to try a  third party tool, lightshot or [url=https://gyazo.com/en]gyazo are good choices too.

Patio, that's too easy for some people. The Print Scrn key is too hard for most people.

What I mean is, (I was agreeing with you) that whatever simple thing is built in to Windows (Snipping Tool) or Print Scrn, people will write, suggest or peddle apps that do the same thing. Just look at all the Notepad or Explorer 'replacements'.

In the "Ease of access keyboard" settings there is a toggle switch that can switch print screen from it's traditional function (copy screenshot to clipboard) to instead "open screen snipping" (Snip & Sketch, I think?).
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Thank you all for your help.
Some things are not what I expect. I recall that Ore Drive used to help me with screenshots. But now it does not. So I have to open Paint and paste and crop and save. That does work fine, just more keystrokes for me.

Somehow I can not get the the settings in One Drive. I give up.  :'(
