jpegs now appearing as pdfs

All the files in just one of my many folders containing hundreds of pictures in jpeg format have somehow been converted to pdfs and can't be opened.
The error message says the files have been damaged

All the files in the affected folder are Avery address labels,  some I have had for over 5 years.  One was created using the Avery on-line design webpage., the others using the now discontinued Avery downloadable programme.

I suspect that the problem may be related to an upgrade from Windows7 to Windows10 earlier this year.

Is there any way of recovering these files?

Would that be possible that PDF program has set to default app to open up your JPEG file? You might try to click on either of the JPEG file and  choose photo viewer as the default program to play the  selected file.
