Windows Update deleted my Passwords Bookmarks & ???
    « on: August 12, 2023, 01:53:58 AM »
Hi ImnoGuru here, Thanks for taking the time to try to help me.
My computer (laptop) tells me this
    Edition   Windows 10 Home
    Version   22H2
    Installed on   ‎9/‎08/‎2020
    OS build   19045.3208
Experience   Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19041.1000.0

Thursday ( in Australia ) Windows ??? or Firefox did an update. I know Firefox did.
Now ALL my remembered websites & passwords dont exist on this computer.

Everything is .... well not there. In my opinion it should still be somewhere there... just I cant find it to recover it.
So far I tried to do a restore BUT there is nothing there. :'(
Some people here know me & Im no slouch but Imnoguru either.  :-\
I should have had several restore points or backups ( with my own names ) in there but NO. Nothing since the 9th of August.  :'( :'(

Ive spent the last few days looking around, doing some virus checks ( as recommended by evilfantasy ) So no virus infections there.
Your welcome to see the logs if you wish.

So Im my humble opinion, this stuff should still be somewhere buried in the hard drive.

Can some one please give me few methods I can apply to assist with this recovery.

    Many thanks. ImnoGuru. :)

I think it was the update of FF that caused this and doing a restore probably won't help.

Thanks for the reply SuperDave. You are  totally correct. I tried it & got no positive result.

Im just curious as to whether any of my restore points, that should exist on the drive somewhere, or a set of cache that might be readable are there that I can access.

Maybe an undelete program or am I just too far gone that these things have been overwritten already.
      So frustrated  :-[

One saving grace is that I have a separate copy of some of my more regular/important sites hotmail, gmail so the rest can just sit there & die off over time. Sorry Twitter but eh who really cares, right.

First of-all,  I understand your pain. I have had things like that happen to me.
Some things I can get back by a restore of a backup. But that c an also be a danger.

What helps me best is another windows PC. I can use it as a test of the restore thing. Also, I sync my FF on the two computers so there are  backups and passwords.

Right now I am in danger because the current  PC I have s very odd ball and it is hard to duplicate.  I must do some work on that.  :-[

I keep copies of all my passwords apart from my PC. That is a big help. My banks and credit people have support with password issues.

Ask a teen age person. Somehow they know how to get passwords   ::)

      Hi

Check on the drive for a folder called Windows.old this is created when windows updates. See what date is on this folder by selecting properties, if it is close in date you may find your favorites in your Firefox profile as explained here

      https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data

if you look for Appdata in windows.old

Hey Geek-9pm, I was always a favorite of having PAPER copies (10 years ago) but as time passes by, things just disappeared.

Even other old computers & laptops over time have been, Hmmmm lets just say gone.

Once upon a time, I remember a program that would show deleted files with just a ? as the only thing that was changed so it was pretty easy to guess the missing letter to recover that file.

Moving on Lisa_maree thanks for your input as well. That was an interesting excursion through my computer.
The first thing I did was to copy everything that came up just in case I changed something.
Everything I looked at though dated to the disaster day and after it.
Im almost enthusiastic that there are some JSON files of earlier dates.... but they are JSON files... So thats a bit above my pay grade.

Resolved.... to a certain degree at least?

We have a company called Geeks to you through a main company called Officeworks in Australia. So I engaged a consultant to ...give it a shot.
He found the JSON files I described earlier but there is also a second file needed, and he found that one too. Dated 2018.
Using this tool here he seemed to piece it all together. :)

And of course everything is now relevant to 2018. So a bit of work to bring it all back to reality. Passwords have changed, sites have old info, bookmarks arent all there etc so a bit of work to keep me occupied for a while. :-\

Thanks to all for the input & guidance.  ImnoGuru   ;D
