    Some site has a .php extention instead of .html .

    Does that specifically signifies anything?

    It means that the page is probebly useing PHP, see http://www.php.net.

    Yup.  >PHP< makes it possible to run programs on web servers so that pages are automatically changed.  If you look at the URLs on this site, you'll see a ".cgi" in there instead of ".html".  CGI tends to indicate Perl programming - Perl is a scripting language in much the same way that PHP is.

    Scripting is necessary, because it would be utterly impossible, for example, for someone to re-write all the relevant pages on this site, every time someone posted a message...
