Scan disk keeps resetting
« on: August 31, 2004, 01:43:29 PM »
whenever I run scan disk I get about 3 bars completed and then it resets and starts over.  It will keep doing this and never finish.  Likewise defrag does the same thing.  any ideas?

Why would there be something writing to the disc every 15-30 seconds.  I shut down everything in the background.  And is there a way to get to safe mode without shutting down during boot-up?

Thanks:
Bryan

everytime you run scandisk when it runs into an error or a problem it restarts itself after it fixes, its normal, scan when you goto bed and it will be done in the morning, then run it agian and it wont restart as much or at all. checking for errors and defrag, is somthing you should do often to keep your computer running clean.

That is actually not a very good way to get into safe-mode, it may damage Windows files if you attempt to do so.

This is a common fault when you have Trojans on your system.

You should use SpyBot  S&D , AdAware and SpywareBlaster to keep the system clean. (Practically everyone does these days.)

I use Delindex.bat from my Windows Start-Up or Emergency Boot Disk (EBD) to remove a lot of junk files and I keep the (hidden) System Restore folder down to just 500Mb.

After four years experience with Windows ME I can safely say that using ScanDefrag is one of the best ways to run the maintenance on an ME system, but I had the program custom altered for me by Jon at ScanDefrag.

Try Version 5 ·0 and see if that helps you. I use my custom version with Norton Utilities DiskDoctor and SpeedDisk and it flies through the four drives in a couple of minutes.

It is MUCH faster now since I changed the HDD to a new model with an 8Mb disk-cache.

It is in FACT four times faster than on the old drive with its 2Mb disk-cache.

I find that if you are using NERO's InCD then you have to stop it from running as it will block scandisk and defrag.

With it stopped the normal Windows ScanDisk and Defrag are equally four times faster than before, but I have noticed an interesting phenomenon.

If scandisk is slow, try moving your mouse curser rapidly back & forth across the scandisk progress bar. For some unknown reason this can sometimes speed it up considerably. (Very strange!)
