Tribe Wanted: A warning
« on: July 19, 2006, 09:24:12 AM »
No, not at all computer related (except that there is a website involved).

Just a word of caution: if anyone happens to come across www.tribewanted.com any time between now and 1 September, they should read >this article< before signing up.  An old proverb says, "A fool and his money are soon parted."

I mention it because it has had some media attention over the last few months, and not everyone who sees the coverage will be as skeptical as me.  Beware.

Regrettably, I speak from having personal knowledge of one of the owners of the project who has an unfortunate track record of starting projects and not completing them - and moreover - making a hasty exit when they fail.  If you happen to read this Mark, I hope you do not feel that I am judging you harshly.  At least in part, you are well-intentioned.  But this scheme is hugely misguided.

Just my opinion.

Might not be a scam, but they needed 5000 people to sign up by 1 September, and they've just over a month left to go, with only 800-odd (in both senses) people signed up.  They ain't gonna make it.  And since much of the prepaid money will already have been spent, there aren't gonna be any (full) refunds either.

    Pity.

    The scam-o-meter definitely went up!
But, after reading, it does seem like an interesting idea, but I just don't see how it could possible work!
    It lacks information....

    800 people at £120 a time = £96,000 = US$178,000 = AUS$237,000.

Even taking into acount the set up costs, web site design etc, they must have at least £50k left (as salary for the two "directors").  Not bad for a few months work...

If you have to wonder if this was a scam, then you will find yourself scammed in the near future!

If it sounds too good to be true.....

They set themselves a target of 1 September for 5000 people to sign up.  They're way short.  So I would just check to see what the website says after 1 September.

What could possibly be a good point? I couldn't see one.

There are some things about it that really appeal.  At times I get fed up of the pace of life and all this technology, and wish that we could return to a time when life was simpler (i.e. no cars, no computers, no television).  There was a time when people would know virtually everyone within their communities.  I hardly know anyone on my street.  Not all progress is good...
