Do you use any non-computing forums?
« on: July 20, 2006, 08:51:26 PM »
Computing clearly seems to be the predominant subject of discussion in Internet forums.  But, forums for many other topics do exist.  Do you use any of them?

Some that I occasionally used are:
www.automotiveforums.com, a very active forum
http://www.peachtreeusers.com/.forums/, for Peachtree Accounting
http://www.quickbooksusers.com/.forums/, for QuickBooks
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/, a very nice digital photography forum

There are quite a few others, but I won't attempt to list them all.  One of the strangest ones, I thought, was http://www.lockpicking101.com/index.php; that's Lock Picking 101

Yes, if computer games don't count. I'm a member of CivFanatics (don't ask) and the LucasForums.

Directly computer related, I'm a member of two VB.NET forums, and I think I still have my throwaway account at TechArena. ;)

Well, I am a MEMBER of two other non computer forums....
I don't really use them anymore. The tech help section got filled up with non tech questions. Most of the tech help was non computer. I also hung out in the GD section.
        The sites were:
        www.thesims.com
        www.thesims2.com

        that's it.

(I also hang out around www.answers.yahoo.com for my big computer questions. But those people are not always helpful. That's why it has its own abuse button)

Doesn't that count as "computer" as they are computer games?

        www.thesims.com
        www.thesims2.com

Yeah, I think I'll have to disqualify the game sites.  They're too closely computer-related.  Perhaps even my mention and the Peachtree and QuickBooks forums were not good examples.  I was really looking for some comments on forums where the focus is on truly non-computing topics.

        Here's one: Pet Discussion Forum
Or, DoItYourself.com Community Forums, for home improvement DIY projects.
        Or, golf, such as http://www.golfforum.com/
        Etc.

Lurking is an activity performed on Internet Forums that involves wandering the website, reading posts and never actually posting anything. Most internet forums do not charge for access to post, so in many cases "lurkers", as they are called, are completely anonymous. However, in special cases, such as on the Something Awful Forums, lurking is necessary with an account because not all forums are visible to the general public.

Most forums encourage lurking because it gives the user a better feel for how the forum operates and what kind of people its userbase is made up of. In most cases, a combination of reading the forum's FAQ or rules and lurking will guarantee that the user in question will never be banned.
