Antivirus:
www.avast.com > Free for Home Use

You only want one antivirus and spyware and adware protection installed (one of each, or a combination program that protects from all)
Having more than one can cause problems, especially when you have more than one antivirus program.

Use just one anti-virus program.  Running two at the same time can cause conflict.  For spyware removal, look under the Security category at http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1143816298
Computer Hope Forum - QA0016 Essential Software tools.  I suggest getting Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy.  You could get more than two from that list, but two using two will normally do a fairly good job of keeping you system clean.

Also be sure that you're using a firewall.

Zylstra, many people use more than one adware/spyware program.  That's generally not a problem because they are ususally not continuously running in the background, like anti-virus software.

If you're using Windows XP with SP2 (Service Pack 2) installed, open Control Panel, click on the Windows Firewall icon, and verify that it is enabled.  Now, if you have a another software program installed, I recommend you disable Windows Firewall; like anti-virus, running two firewalls may cause conflict.

Many instead of multiple vague posts it would be less confusing to everyone to post all of your problems in one place?

Such vague communication.  Are you totally unable to make precise statements, stating clearly and exactly what you mean?

Go back to security center for a moment, and tell us what it says for AntiVirus and then I will be able to properly give you directions on downloading, installing, and registering Avast

You are very welcome. Avast is one of the best free AntiVirus programs. It removes viruses and adware better than Symantec!

    Myself!

    Avast can remove System Restore viruses, great for people who are not tech geeks that cant disable it on their own because they don't know how, and great for those of us who don't like to loose our system restore files.

    Avast can delete upon boot, Symantec has no feature that I have been able to find, and McAfee has the same story as Symantec.

        to the people who are not clueless;
        I do not think having more than (1) anti-  virus / spyware / adware  whatever is a bad thing. In fact, it is probably better to have (2) BUT , only one running at a time. Having 2 different programs can catch more "bad stuff" than just utilizing one program. On many occassions I have ewido find things my main defender program does not pickup and vice versa. The main point here being make sure only one application is running. Never both programs.

        You only need one spyware scanner. If you get so many viruses that you actually need two to cover everything, you're doing something wrong.

        I never get viruses nor spyware.
