Win 98 se setup from blank hard drive help
« on: October 02, 2006, 01:24:01 PM »
When I am using win 98 se setup on my blank 40 gig hard drive, it says it cannot read from last cluster on drive c. It says it might not be configured properly or it might be damaged. It says
I may need to turn on logical block addressing in bios (the bios screen wont come on for me) then it says it may be incorrectly marked as non-lba. WHAT DO I DO???!!! :-?

Do you know how to access your BIOS?  Has that hard drive previously been used in this computer?

One: I'm fixing up an old pc I got for free for a school project and all i know is I got to it once and instructions to get to the bios screen wouldn't work or come up since. Two:I have gotten to setup for 98 se 20 times on this blank hard drive and it stopped in the middle of getting to setup 10 times.

(P.S. I am downloading win 98 se from my cd if that has anything to do with it not working)

Reformat and repartition the HDD.

FAT32 can't see drives over 32GB in size.

If that HDD has serious errors the install will never finish...DLoad a WinME bootdisk from bootdisk.com create the floppy and boot up with it

This will install some basic DOS utilities on that HDD. I recommend running chkdsk first to see if it can fix the errors.

After that run FDisk to prepare the HDD
Instructions below.

Free disk analysis utilities are available from the appropriate hard drive maker's site.

And they usually have setup utilities that overcome the 32gig limit. I use several 40gig HD with 9x. (Seagate drives and SeaTools)
